I thought it was a bat, too, when I first looked out there. Austin has a lot of bats! Ooh! That would be a good post! It is a moth of some sort. I think. I hope.
It may be a male black witch moth. Females have a brighter color. http://www.texasento.net/witchTX.htm They're known for their size.
